Hluma Trust- Creating Opportunities for People to Grow
The name “Hluma” means to ‘germinate’ or ‘grow’ in the Xhosa language, because our organization seeks to support the germination of new initiatives and the growth of projects, individuals and the community.
The Trust was formed to support care and development work in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. It was inspired by the energy and creativity demonstrated by individuals in the Khayelitsha community who through their efforts are alleviating poverty, creating jobs and generally stimulating their environment to act positively.
A Human Development Approach
South Africa is a developing country with a stable and well developed economy and infrastructure, and a high standard of living for a small percentage of the population. Statistics – South Africa however estimated in 2007 that if a poverty line of R538 per person per month is used (in 2000 values, and equalling about 54 Euros) more or less 68% of the population lives under the poverty line
– therefore an estimated 33 million people.
Hluma believes that this is not necessary. We believe that Amartya Sen, Nobel prize-winning economist, is correct when he says that development has to be the development of people – human development. Money is essential for such development, but it is only instrumental. The priority is to ensure that each individual has access to the resources which will allow him or her to live the life they value, based on their own choices and their own agency or efforts.
Programmes
Hluma Trust believes in the human development approach to enhancing the lives of people in poor communities.
We promote human development and upliftment by supporting already existing entrepreneurs, social projects and community based organisations which conduct projects that enhance the capabilities of the wider community.
